“Flipping” on the Fly with Ted-Ed Videos

teded Ted-Ed is a fabulous resource with a library of hundreds of videos catalogued by subject area.  The videos are created through the collaboration between an educator and animator and present concepts in a fun and engaging way.  Each video has a “quick quiz” with multiple choice questions, “think” questions that are more open ended, and a “dig deeper” section with additional links and resources about the topic.

They have now added a feature called “flip this lesson” – where you can customize the video for your students. Most of the pre-created videos are great as is, so this feature allows me to specifically put this video in my account, share with my students, and track how well my students do on the quiz questions.

Another really cool feature is that you can “flip” ANY YouTube video!!  This feature is still in beta and so is not quite perfect, but it is still cool.  Just bring up any YouTube video (including Ted Talks), create questions, add links, and then share with your students.  The beta version does not allow you to create multiple choice questions like the ones that are in the pre-created videos, and the link button for the “dig deeper” section does not function.

Here is a great article on this Ted-Ed’s flipping feature.  I created a flipped TedEd video in 10 short minutes.

A three-minute Ted-Ed website tour is below – definitely worth your time!:
